Loisaida is a term derived from the Latino (and especially Puerto Rican) pronunciation of "Lower East Side", a neighborhood in Manhattan, New York City. Loisaida Avenue is now an alternate name for Avenue C in the Alphabet City neighborhood of New York City, whose population has largely been Hispanic (mainly Puerto Rican) since the late 1960s.

Shooting Elephants
George Orwell's Essay on Shooting an Elephant. A terrific read, although it is only somewhat relevant to my time in Asia.
Although I am certainly not a colonial ruler in Cambodia (far from it!), I do find myself slipping into a post-colonial role of authority, at times. The dynamic is hard to escape.
I am happy to say that I haven't shot any elephants.

Mr. Magarik,
Happy belated birthday.
How's that super-powered American currency* treating you? How's the Natalie Holloway effect going for you? With all your American advantages, it's a testament to your character that you haven't yet begun paying a Cambodian kid two bucks a week to fan you or hold a parasol over your head all day.
At any rate, I hope that all is well.
